8 Things You May Not Know About CBD

Even if you're one of the 64,000 Americans currently enjoying the benefits of CBD on a daily basis, you may not be aware of what a treasure you've stumbled upon. In fact, CBD is so beneficial in so many different ways you might be wondering, "Why has this taken so long? Why didn't we know about this before?" Before the 2018 Farm Bill passed, the industrial hemp plant was still considered a Schedule 1 Drug and was federally illegal. So the CBD from it wasn't able to be studied or legally used in consumer products. Its previous illegal status also contributed to the "devil's lettuce" stigma still surrounding it today. Now that the industrial hemp plant is legal in all 50 states and CBD is considered a supplement, CBD products are really picking up steam. An increasing number of studies show that CBD is a natural, plant-based substance that has all sorts of applications. Take a look at some of the surprising ways why and how CBD can help you:

1. CBD does NOT make you high

If you're feeling “high,” “funny,” "fuzzy," “woozy” or “strange,” what you've taken probably has THC in it, and is not purely CBD. CBD is simply a molecule that comes from industrial hemp and does not produce any psychoactive effects.

2. CBD already exists naturally in your body

You actually create your own CBD in your head—literally! Cannabidiol (CBD) is only one of many cannabinoids that are found in mammals and plants. The human brain makes CBD, referred to as an “endocannabinoid.”

3. CBD exists in plants

The CBD molecule can also be found in plants, and many plant-based foods, like oranges, chocolate, and hops (for beer). No wonder they make you feel so good! In plants, they're referred to as “phytocannabinoids.”

4. Your body has CBD receptors in every organ

CBD molecules from plants or from our own brains bind to receptors inside our bodies. These receptors are located in the brain, the skin, and on every single organ. The receptor is the lock and CBD is the key. When CBD fits into the receptor, a cascade of positive effects take place, among them a reduction of the body’s production of stress hormones.

5. You can't build up a tolerance, or get addicted to CBD

CBD has no known toxic or tolerance effects. In short, it doesn’t build up in your body and you cannot become addicted to it, no matter how much you take.

6. CBD is considered a supplement and is legal in all 50 states

Although it comes from a cannabis plant, it is very different from marijuana, which is a different cannabis plant altogether. Marijuana use is regulated nationwide, in some form. Pure CBD products, on the other hand, can be used anywhere, any time, without breaking the law. It's both helpful and harmless.

7. CBD can help fight opioid addiction

NPR recently reported on a study that concluded: "CBD can help reduce stress and cravings among people who've been addicted to opioids." According to research published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, some of the study's subjects were given CBD and others were given placebos, "Those who received the CBD, they showed a reduction of their craving and they also showed a reduction of their anxiety," said Yasmin Hurd, director of the Addiction Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

8. The benefits of CBD extend to helping people with many different diseases

A study by the World Health Organization’s Expert Committee on Drug Dependence said CBD may benefit people diagnosed with common neurological, cardiovascular, inflammatory and autoimmune health issues.
